Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana' (Dwarf Mondo Grass)

Description:
Dwarf Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana') is a low-growing, evergreen perennial grass-like plant prized for its compact form and lush, tufted foliage. Its fine, dark green leaves form dense clumps, making it an excellent ground cover. The plant grows to approximately 5–10 cm tall, spreading slowly to create a uniform carpet-like effect.

Growth Habit:

  • Compact and clumping.
  • Slow-spreading via underground rhizomes.

Foliage:

  • Narrow, arching leaves.
  • Deep green and glossy, providing year-round interest.

Flowers and Fruit:

  • In summer, small, delicate, pale lavender or white flowers emerge on short stems, although they are often hidden by the foliage.
  • These flowers may be followed by tiny, dark blue or black berries in autumn.

Preferred Conditions:

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to deep shade, making it a versatile choice for various locations.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, moist soil but tolerates a range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods.

Uses:

  • Ideal for edging garden beds, pathways, or borders.
  • Popular as a ground cover in shaded areas or under trees.
  • Excellent for rockeries, Japanese-inspired gardens, and in between pavers.
  • Can also be grown in containers for a tidy, ornamental look.

Maintenance:

  • Virtually maintenance-free and requires little to no pruning.
  • Remove old or damaged foliage as needed to maintain its neat appearance.

Special Features:

  • Highly tolerant of foot traffic, making it suitable for planting between stepping stones.
  • Hardy in a wide range of climates (zones 7–11), including frost and heat.
  • Non-invasive and slow-growing, making it a well-behaved addition to any garden.

This versatile plant is a perfect choice for creating a polished and low-maintenance landscape, adding structure and greenery to both modern and traditional garden designs.
